The Sun: who you are
The Sun is the placement everybody knows, and the one that gets the most weight in popular astrology. It describes your core identity — what you are like when you are being most deliberately yourself, and what you are proud of.
It is genuinely meaningful. It is also one factor out of about forty, which is why sun-sign horoscopes feel so hit-and-miss.
The Moon: what you need
The Moon describes emotional need — what makes you feel safe, what you do when you are upset, and what you reach for when nobody is watching. Most people find their Moon sign more recognisable than their Sun.
It changes sign every two to three days, so you need a birth date and ideally a time to find it.
The Rising: how you come across
The Rising sign — the Ascendant — is the sign that was coming over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It describes first impressions, physical style and instinctive reaction: the version of you people meet before they know you.
It changes roughly every two hours, which means it is the placement that most requires an accurate birth time — and the one most likely to explain why you have never quite recognised yourself in your sun sign.
Why all three at once
The three together describe a much more specific person than any of them alone. Someone with a Capricorn Sun, a Pisces Moon and a Gemini Rising is not a Capricorn with details — they are a fundamentally different person from a Capricorn with an Aries Moon and a Scorpio Rising.
